How to Choose and Buy a Domain Name for Your Website

Your domain name is your address on the internet, and you will use it for years. Here is how to pick a good one and buy it without paying for things you do not need.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address people type to reach your site, such as yourname.com. You rent it from a registrar, usually for one year at a time, and you renew it to keep it. A domain is separate from hosting: hosting is where your files live, the domain is how people find them.

Step 1: Choose a name people can remember

Step 2: Pick the extension

The extension is the ending after the dot. A .com is the most familiar worldwide, and a good choice if you want an international audience. Others, such as .org, .net or country endings, work too, but visitors may type .com by habit. Some newer endings are cheap at first and expensive later, so always check the price.

Step 3: Check the real price, not only the first one

This is where beginners lose money. Registrars often show a low price for the first year and a higher price at renewal. When I bought mine, the regular price was about 14.98 dollars a year, a promotion brought the first year to 6.48 dollars, and a small 0.20 dollar ICANN fee was added at checkout. Prices and promotions change, so look for the renewal price before you pay.

Step 4: Buy it

  1. Search your chosen name on a registrar's website and check that it is available.
  2. Add it to your cart, for one year to start.
  3. Check the cart line by line. Registrars suggest extras such as hosting, email and paid DNS. You do not need them to own a domain.
  4. Keep privacy protection on if it is offered for free, because it hides your personal details from public lookup. Some registrars charge for it, so check.
  5. Create your account with your real details and pay.

Step 5: Connect it to your site

A domain does nothing until you point it to your hosting. Your host gives you either nameservers or DNS records to enter in your registrar's settings. Changes can take from a few minutes to a day to spread across the internet.

Final thoughts

A domain is a small cost that gives you a lasting address that belongs to you. Choose something simple, check the renewal price, buy only what you need, and write down the date it expires.
